M1VBC's "Tryout Tune-ups"  are designed to familiarize young athletes with club tryout drills and procedures. Coaches will go over drills used in tryouts which will include evaluations and feedback throughout the workshop. This is a great way to reduce tryout nerves and increase confidence. For more information, see our Tryout Tune-ups page.

Special Notes

Female Only - Players who were born on or after July 1, 2002, (who are defined as 18 & under by the USAV Age Definition) and are in the 11th grade for the current academic year are waivered to compete in 17 & under. (This age waiver is based on recruiting concerns for 11th grade girls previously required to participate in girls 18’s qualifiers and the 18’s GJNC.)

Players who were born on or after July 1, 2002 OR players who were born on or after July 1, 2001 and a high school student in the twelfth (12th) grade or below during some part of the current academic year.

The formal wording of USAV's age definition can be a little intimidating.  To understand USA Volleyball's age definition more simply, just know that to try out and play for a specific age team, your athlete must still be that age at the end of the season, defined as June 30, 2021  (Exceptions are made for 17- and 18-year-old athletes in specific situations related to playing with their grade).  For example, if your athlete's birthday was in December 2006, then she is 13 years old during tryouts, but will turn 14 during the season, and will still be 14 at the end of the season on June 30, 2021.  Therefore she will try out as a 14-year-old.  With the club's permission, it's always "legal" to play for an older age team, but not for a younger team.

Tryout Overview

Tryouts is the process through which players are chosen for the various M1 teams. We have 2-3 evaluators for each age group, depending on the number of players trying out for that age division. This process consists of written evaluations and observation of the player’s skill practice contexts as well as in game like situations. The evaluators are also looking at a player’s prior level of play, competitiveness, coachability and motivation. It is up to the team coaches and evaluators to determine how much weight is given to each aspect of the tryout process to form the best teams possible; and the weighting may vary from year to year for the same age group.  Tryout participants will be given t-shirts with a tryout number.  This is to help identify the players when evaluating their skill and performance.  This shirt is to be worn at each tryout.

Evaluating Skill Levels

All evaluations are  subjective – coaches from different clubs, and even within the same club, may disagree on the potential of any given athlete.  At M1, coaches understand this and generally try to seek out the opinions of their colleagues within the club when making final roster choices.

Volleyball experience and skill levels are a great indicator of an athlete making a team, but there are other factors that come into play, such as attitude, work ethic, and coachability.  These are all part of the evaluation process during the tryout.

Offers and Commitments

After the completion of the tryout session. The evaluating coaches and club director will get together and discuss how the teams will be formed. The selected players will receive a phone /personal offer with a team. The family must then accept or decline the offer by November 1, 2020. Upon acceptance,  a non-refundable deposit will be required.  This down payment helps with enrollment of tournaments, court space, uniforms, and insurance.  Please note that all offers may not be given out at the same time. This is simply because some decisions can be made easier than others.   We thank you in advance for educating yourself on the tryout process.
